Today 16th of April 2025, Chemistry department of Government Graduate College for Women Gulberg Lahore has organised a one day workshop titled “Sustainable Green Chemistry Environment leading towards Entrepreneurial Cottage Industries for Women Empowerment“. Madam principal Prof. Dr. Nighat Naheed Zafar, Vice Principal, Prof. Dr. Shagufta Gulraiz, Prof. Dr. Samra Imran, Dr. Arifa Kiyani, Prof. Dr. Rozina Ch. and madam Shagoofa Jabeen graced the event. All the students of the college and their HOD’s were also invited. The workshop was divided in to 3 categories the one providing awareness and knowledge about 3Rs – Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle – and secondly it emphasizes practical strategies for minimizing waste and promoting sustainability through discussions and hands-on activities. The participants learnt effective ways to reduce consumption, creatively reuse materials, and responsibly recycle waste. A good and attractive effort of carbon foot prints was made for awareness and to reduce the use of carbon in our daily life. Students demonstrated and captured car exhaust gases and devised a filter which can reduce the harmfulness of exhaust gases. Students also give awareness about the household and kitchen chemicals; how they are producing damage to the environment and also give their alternatives. A vertical farming model was also presented and was made by waste materials to grow hydroponic plants in our houses to meet our kitchen requirements like mint, coriander, methi, tomatoes etc and can be extended to a higher level to earn. The third category was entrepreneurship for women empowerment. Students of chemistry made on the spot chemical free multivitamin cream, cost effective washing powder, chemical free deodorant and lastly cakes and other bakery items. The samples were also given to the guests for use and feedback.
The students proved that chemistry is not only their subject to study but it can be a powerful tool to earn their living and support their families respectably. The students were awarded with prizes through a lucky draw and a banner of the slogan “Go Green” was also left in the sky with air balloons. 3R’s, attendees in the end take a pledge that from now onwards they will make a positive impact on the environment and promote a culture of sustainability in their homes and communities.
