Department of Visual Arts BFA (Painting) FYDP Course

Introduction:

Department of Fine Arts is among the oldest departments of this college. It was upgraded in 2010 when, under the new policy of HEC, the college was affiliated with Lahore College for Women University. Fine Arts department of Government Graduate College for Women Gulberg offers BFA i.e. Bachelors of Fine Arts with four years degree program. In this program, the first year is the foundation year and comprises two semesters with different theoretical and practical courses along with compulsory subjects. In the second year (semester three and four) more courses are being added with higher levels with a number of major and minor and compulsory subjects. The students learn different art genres and in the third year (semester five and six) they choose their major. In this year they do their mini thesis and they have their final thesis in the 4th year (semester seven and eight).

 This program is specifically designed to equip the future generation of artists for current and international curriculum of art academia. Students of the department of Fine Arts are not only well equipped in their art training but also actively participate in various co-curricular activities like exhibitions and competitions and always win prizes.

The department is endowed with highly qualified and competent faculty, whose aim is to provide their students with academic discipline and confidence to make them valuable citizens. This is the reason that the students achieve positions and rolls of honor in university every year and secure gold and silver medals for college.

Aims and Objectives:

  • The Department of Fine Arts has launched BFA FYDP (four-year degree program) in year 2010 to prepare the students to specialize in the subject according to the international standards of studies.
  • Majors are painting, Print Making, Calligraphy and drawing throughout four years but starting from foundation course, they will have a good chance to learn other skills relevant to fine arts in part II and Ill by choosing minors from the list according to their choice.
  • Final year will be their thesis year and the students will apply all the techniques learnt in the past three years. So, after graduation the students skilled in painting, Print Making, Calligraphy and drawing will be well equipped in these techniques along with Sculpture, ceramics and miniature painting.
  • Besides practical, our students also study History of Arts for academic understanding. After graduation, they will be able to compete with candidates from different universities.

Admission Criteria for BFA (Painting, Print Making and Calligraphy)

  • The candidate should be at least qualified at Intermediate level scoring 60% marks in F.A/F.Sc, and in Fine arts.
  • The candidate will have to appear for an aptitude test of life drawing. This test is mandatory for every candidate, with prior background of fine arts or not.
  • Candidate should have good communication skill in English, as all theory subjects will be taught in English only.

  • New courses, after the change of the degree nomenclature, completely harmonize with new trends in the subject.
  •  Keeping in view the growing need for research the department has furnished a syllabus that provides the knowledge from the basic to the advanced level in Art history. Students not only learn the methodology but also write a research paper in the final year. This makes the grounds for good research work.
  • It develops a creative and critical approach. Overall, the courses followed from Part-I to VI make, student well­ equipped in basic knowledge of Arts skills to develop a vision and also help them to excel in the field of their choice, going confidently in practical profession.
  • The most promising career opportunities for them are teaching, Print media, Fashion Designers, Advertising, Museums and Art Galleries, TAs in colleges.
