Department of Statistics

Statistics is a multidisciplinary subject with widespread applications in nearly all physical and social sciences. Its significance has grown exponentially with the rise of data science and data analytics. As a powerful tool for data analysis, drawing inferences, and making predictions, statistics plays a pivotal role in providing meaningful insights and quantitative reasoning across various fields of study.

Statistics was introduced at Government Graduate College for Women, Gulberg, Lahore, in 1986 at both the intermediate and undergraduate levels and has remained a popular choice among students ever since. With the introduction of BS programs in various disciplines in 2010, statistics is now taught as both a minor and compulsory course in most academic programs.

Importance of the Subject:

The importance of statistics cannot be overstated, as it is essential in the interpretation and analysis of data. In today’s data-driven world, statistics enables informed decision-making and helps identify trends, patterns, and relationships within data. It is an indispensable tool in scientific research, healthcare, economics, social sciences, business, and technology. Statistics empowers professionals to make accurate predictions, improve processes, and create evidence-based strategies for solving complex problems. As industries continue to generate vast amounts of data, the role of statistics in extracting meaningful insights and guiding decisions is more crucial than ever.
